Henry Fankhauser of Silver Spring MarylandHenry Frankhauser of Silver Spring, Maryland is the true success story of a writer. On April 27, 2003 in Reno, Nevada he will be honored by the National Women Bowling Writers at their annual luncheon. Frankhauser will be the recipient of the Alberta E. Crowe Award for Distinguished Service to the Game of American Tenpins in the Communications Field.

Associated with bowling in leagues and tournaments as a teenager, Henry joined the staff of The Washington (D.C.) Daily News in1948, right out of high school, as a copy boy. He had been sports editor of his school newspaper and he began volunteering bowling news to the sports editor. Seven years later he was appointed bowling editor and a member of the sports staff and immediately started a daily bowling page of news, results, schedules, features and a column called "Tenpin Topics."

Frankhauser was known for penning his aggressive defense of bowling which gained him national attention and praise. His column on "lazy" bowling managers and proprietors in the National Bowling review was rewarded with a wrist watch from a bowling center owner and his rebuttal to a Saturday Evening Post story by Washington Redskins' former owner which downgraded bowlers and bowling, was quoted by columnists throughout the nation.

Henry not only promoted bowling with his pen, he originated "Bowler's Night" at a race track and at RFK Stadium where bowlers could show their membership card and get in for a reduced price. He covered the tour for the Washington Daily News and was also an alternate player and accompanied an all-star D.C. tenpin aggregation of three teams on a ten-day goodwill exhibition tour of England promoted by AMF and British Overseas Airways Co.

His promotional efforts have benefited numerous charities and he has written bowling columns and articles for a variety of publications as a member of staff or as a free-lance writer. He has won several first place awards from the Bowling Writers Association of America, National Women Bowling Writers, Bowling Magazine and other writing contests for features, columns and news articles.

In addition to his writing skills, Henry Frankhauser is a sought after Emcee, guest speaker and presenter of awards. He has participated in numerous seminars and clinics as reporter and participant and has received many awards and honors from local civic and bowling organizations for his continued coverage and promotion of the sport.

If you don't have a newsletter, start one. If you want to make your bowlers aware of the great people who grace your lanes, go down and interview them.
