NWBW Special Award Winners Honored

The National Women Bowling Writers Association will honor four special award recipients at their annual meeting luncheon in Wichita, Kansas on May 2, 2004.

The awards, named for honored members of NWBW, are presented each year to members who distinguish themselves with their promotion through the field of journalism.

Honored for 2004 are Bette Addington, Bakersfield, CA - Mary Jannetto Award for the Outstanding NWBW Member in Promotion of Local Bowling; Gerry Perry, Henderson, NV - Jo Ettien Lieber Award for Distinguished Service to the Game of Ten Pins; Linda Nelson, St. Charles, MO Alberta E. Crowe Award for Distinguished Service in the Communications Field; Delores Webb, Indianapolis, IN - The Helen Duval AMF Award for Outstanding Service to the Young American Bowling alliance.

NWBW is pleased that Storm will once again be a luncheon sponsor. Reservations may be made by using the Luncheon Reservation Form says Chairman Jackie Wyckoff. NWBW members are $12.50. Non-member guests are welcome for a fee of $25.00. Deadline is April 1, 2005 (extended).

The writing and publication award winners will be recognized at the luncheon and Mail-a-Graphic Tournament Chairman Jackie Wyckoff will be announcing results of another successful tournament.

Linda Nelson receives NWBW Alberta E. Crowe Award

Linda Nelson, St. Charles MissouriLinda Nelson of St. Charles, Mo. has been a dedicated and tireless worker in the communication field for more than twenty years. She has served as Publicity Chairman for the St. Charles WBA, writing extensively about bowlers and all related activities for the local Missouri-Illinois Bowling News. Upcoming events, tournament and league award winners, Secretaries of the Year, scholarship recipients, Senior Bowler activities and YABA newsworthy items are featured in each issue.

Linda has published two seasonal newsletters, The Gutter Review and The Thursday Trivial Tribune, informing members of local, state and national events and has written a timely newsletter for lane representatives to share with leagues. In addition to writing, she is clever making flyers and eye-catching posters and maintains bulletin boards in local centers - all to promote bowling. For the state publication, The Sho-Me Bugle, she writes a column, "St. Charles Sonata" and submits numerous human interest stories about local bowlers.

She is Vice President of Missouri Women Bowling Writers, a member of Gateway Area Bowling Writers and is currently serving her second term as President of the St. Charles WBA. As a delegate, Linda has represented her association at Missouri and WIBC conventions and participates in all tournaments.

Her honors include induction in the St. Charles WBA Hall of Fame in 1997 and St. Charles County Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service in 1999. On the state level, she designed the winning 1998 MSWBA Tournament Promotion Poster Contest, won the MWBW Carolyn Gilbert YABA Award in 1997 and 1998, the Billy Hughes Writer of the Year Award in 1999, and has garnered several prestigious NWBW awards for writing and photography. In the NWBW writing contests, she has taken 1st place in the non-professional class in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002, winning the coveted Herta Kissell Memorial Bowling Writer of the Year Award in 2001 and 2002. For her love and devotion to the game of tenpins, Linda has earned this distinguished award.

California's Bette Addington receives NWBW Award

Bette Addington, Bakersfield, CABette Addington from Bakersfield, Calif. has promoted bowling for more than 20 years.

In the 1980's Bette began writing for bowling, seeing a need to form a line of communication for the local 600 Club. When she joined the Bakersfield WBA Board of Directors, she was assigned Publicity Chair writing newsletters, articles for the Nugget and promotional correspondence. She continues in that position and co-writes a weekly bowling column for the local newspaper, the Bakersfield Californian.

Human interest stories have become her favorite style of writing and often shares articles about bowlers with her readers. Bette's enthusiasm for promoting bowling is contagious, giving 100% to every undertaking. She is adept at making banners, designing posters, using all promotional skills with perfection. While serving as Chair for Bakersfield WAA Average Book Committee, she promoted all local, state and national events, devoting space to the PWBA, WIBC Queens, USA Bowling and California State Amateur Championship Tournament. Not only does she promote bowling in all its facets, she participates as a bowler. Her honors include BWBA Outstanding Tournament Promotion in 2001, Outstanding Overall Reporting 1998-99, Lucelle Ware Memorial Award 1998, BWBA Presidents Award 1998 and NWBW Billy Hughes Publicity Chairman of the Year Award 2001.

Gerry Perry Receives NWBW Award

Gerry Perry, Henderson NVJo Ettien Lieber Award - Distinguished Service to the Game of Ten Pins Gerry Perry of Henderson, Nev. has given more than 30 years of service to the game of bowling. Starting as a Director for the Las Vegas WBA, she has served in most positions, culminating as President for 8 years. During her term of office, new programs were started, including Director's Seminars and the local Hall of Fame. Gerry served as local Secretary for the Las Vegas WBA during the 1973 WIBC Convention and Tournament and as President at the 1983 WIBC Convention and Tournament.

Her involvement soon grew to Nevada State and WIBC levels. While serving as Nevada WBA President, she initiated Enhanced Jamboree Weekend to train local presidents, secretaries and directors. She taught the President's Seminar, proposed internal controls to guide NWBA and, as Record Book Chairman, produced yearly archival records for all Nevada bowlers. Gerry also published a 50th anniversary booklet for Nevada WBA. As a delegate, Gerry has attended Southern Nevada YABA, Nevada WBA and WIBC conventions. She served on the national level for WIBC Association Ad Hoc Committee, Asst. Sergeant-at-Arms and Nominating Committee, instrumental in revising a policy and procedures manuel for future nominating committees. An NWBW member for 13 years, she has served on Nominating, Legislative and Teller Committees and as a Director for the National 600 Club.

In appreciation of her contributions to bowling, she was awarded Life Membership and Hall of Fame status in the Las Vegas and Nevada WBA for Meritorious Service. She was also named in the "Who Are The Women of Las Vegas" in 1983 and "The Distinguished Women in Southern Nevada" in 1989 and 1990 and has numerous writing awards to her credit.

Indianan Delores Webb Receives Helen Duval Award

Delores Webb, Indianapolis, IN Delores M. Webb of Indianapolis, Ind. has served YABA more than half a century. Since 1953, she has concentrated her efforts on youth bowling as league secretary, promoting, encouraging and chaperoning countless young bowlers to state and national competitions. Beginning in 1959, Deloris has served as Secretary for Greater Indianapolis YABA, compiling the annual YABA average book since 1996. She also fills the capacity of Secretary for Central Indiana BPA and Secretary/Treasurer for Indianapolis Bowling Council.

On the state and national levels, Deloris has been very involved. She has been a Director for the Coca Cola Tournament for 30 years and the Family Twosome Tournament for 24 years, a BPA representative on Indiana YABA board and active with Indiana/Kentucky All-Star Tournament since its inception in 1997, an annual event featuring the top 20 youth bowlers from each state. Delores served as Chairman of the 1991 National Coca Cola Jr. Tournament and co-ordinator for the 1993 National Collegiate Championships held in Indianapolis.

For her tireless devotion and years of dedication to youth bowling, she received the Central Indiana BPA King Pin of the Year Award in 1981, Indiana State YABA Award for Service to Youth Bowling - 1989, Indianapolis WBA Hall of Fame - 2001 and Member Emerita - 2002, Indiana WBA Certificate of Appreciation Award - 2003 and Indiana WBA Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service to youth bowling - 2003 and Certificate of Achievement Award from National BPA.
