NWBW Special Award Winners Honored
Mary Lynly, Publicity Director

The National Women Bowling Writers Association honored four special award recipients at their annual meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on April 21, 2002. The awards, named for honored members of NWBW, were presented this year to members who distinguished themselves with their promotion through the field of journalism.

Honored for 2002 were Sue McCormick of Oscoda, MI - Alberta E. Crowe Award for Distinguished Service in the Communications Field; Margie Bishop of St. Louis, MO - Jo Ettien Lieber Award for Distinguished Service to the Game of Ten Pins; Lynn Angle of St. Louis, MO - Mary Jannetto Award for the Outstanding NWBW Member in Promotion of Local Bowling and Helen Karlovich of Yuma, AZ - The Helen Duval AMF Award for Outstanding Service to the Young American Bowling alliance.

Once again, NWBW provided a sponsored luncheon for its members. We were pleased to partner with Storm, PWBA, and Strike Ten, who co-sponsored the luncheon.

Sue McCormick receives NWBW Alberta E. Crowe Award

Sue McCormick of Oscoda, MichiganAlberta E. Crowe Award - Distinguished Service in the Communications Field will go to long time servant of bowling - Sue McCormick of Oscoda, Michigan.

Sue possesses a wonderful knack with words which is evidenced by having won NWBW awards in nearly every category including the Michigan WBA "Ten Pin Topics" newsletter which she has edited since 1985. She currently hosts 59 local associations in her state with a PR Network for bowling. As a military member, wife and mother, Sue lived in five different states and Germany and wrote bowling news for local and military installations in all. She is an avid bowler and has served as Secretary-Treasurer for five winter, and two summer, leagues each year for 21 years and well as youth leagues. As a delegate to WIBC, she has bowled annually with a group of military-retired wives, all of whom were stationed together in Michigan and all were delegates from three different states at one time.

During her time with the military Sue rotated to various remote areas, and being a great promoter, she arranged for the shipment of materials to support the start of sanctioned bowling in many interesting locations - at one point, running a ten team league in a two-lane "house."

She adds to her resume, teaching, coaching, administrative teaching and private lessons since 1973. Sue McCormick has walked the extra mile to promote bowling with her pen and her expertise.

Missouri's Lynn Angle receives NWBW Award

Lynn Angle, St. Louis, MissouriMary Jannetto Award - Outstanding NWBW member in Promotion of Local Bowling Lynn Angle of St. Louis, Missouri helps bring further credibility to the talent in the "Show Me" State. An NWBW member for seven years, Lynn has already captured three NWBW writing awards and has won the top award four years in a row for the St. Louis display as well as being selected as Writer of the Year for Missouri Women Bowling Writers in 1999.

Lynn has been active in all aspects of the St. Louis WBA. She has contributed articles for the St. Louis Post Dispatch and Missouri-Illinois Bowling News, The Sho-Me Bugle state publication and the Brantwood Pulse & Suburban Journals. In addition to her widespread coverage of a variety of events, she is talented and creative. She made displays, painted banners and made flyers & posters for approximately 40 bowling centers. She took photographs at all functions for use in publication & archives collecting material for scrapbooks to display at all meetings and idea exchanges at the state level.

Lynn worked a booth sponsored by the Missouri Bowling Proprietors, to promote bowling at the Working Women's Survival Show where 1,000 potential bowlers registered, followed-up by the St. Louis bowling centers.

Lynn also served as Publicity Chairman for the St. Louis WBA for several years and is a worthy recipient of this award for her promotion of local bowling.

Bowling Leader Margie Bishop Receives NWBW Award

Margie Bishop, St. Louis, MissouriJo Ettien Lieber Award - Distinguished Service to the Game of Ten Pins An avid proponent of "How Can We Better Serve Our Members" - the 2002 recipient of this award is Margie Bishop of St. Louis, Missouri.

The variety of promotional programs that have been spearheaded by Margie Bishop are staggering in scope: St. Louis WBA "Bring a Friend" reached 582 women and garnered 239 new league bowlers and 104 new WIBC members which also enhanced the working relationship between the St. Louis WBA and their proprietors; Instigated the "Working Women Survival Show" exposing the benefits of bowling to approximately 90,000-100,000 people for the last four years; Organized and edited the St. Louis WBA newsletter individually adapted to each bowling center; Wrote a regular column in the local newspaper and state bowling paper; Works with the National Intercollegiate Championships in St. Louis each year and worked to bring additional funding to promote and market bowling in TV commercials, newspaper and other media ads as well as new programs aimed at bringing in youth - all aimed at "retaining, recruiting and reclaiming members."

During her term as St. Louis WBA President, Margie urged participation in every test program WIBC had to offer and worked diligently in helping to make board members more aware of what they do and what they could do better as a service organization. She is an active participant in tournaments, workshops and benefits, and was instrumental in hosting the Inaugural WIBC/ABC Mixed Tournament in St. Louis.

Margie has been a member of the Missouri WBA board of directors since 1996. She chairs the "Focus on You" committee (formerly the Membership Development Program) and coordinates the BVL program. Having been a WIBC Future Leader bodes well for Margie Bishop. She either has chaired, worked on, or been a member of: U.S. Olympic Festival, USAB State Amateur Championships, National Senior Games, Hall of Fame Tournament, and more.

This Member Emerita of the Missouri Women Bowling Writers and St. Louis WBA Life Member is a stand out and has earned the honor of "Distinguished Service to Game of Ten Pins."

Arizonan Helen Karlovich Receives Helen Duval Award

Helen Karlovich of Yuma, ArizonaHelen Duval AMF Award Outstanding Service to the Young American Bowling Alliance Working with youth has been a lifetime career for Helen Karlovich of Yuma, Arizona. A youth director for 17 years, Helen currently has five youth leagues with up to 40 teams per league.

The dedication of youth leaders is awesome, as is Helen Karlovich. She supports and organizes teams for local YABA, Junior Invitational and Arizona State events. Add to that the logistics of putting groups together, soliciting parental involvement and raising funds so all get a chance to compete in things like the Tournament of Champions, Coca Cola and Junior Pro-Am tournaments each year, and you have mile high paperwork.

Helen takes responsibility for administering and conducting all local tournaments. She recruits and assists youth in the completion of scholarship applications and is proud of the fact that thirty $1,000 scholarships have been presented to youth since 1994.

She has taught children, grandchildren and now great grandchildren in her programs. At 73, Helen has been honored with the Arizona Dot Rowe Hall of Fame (long time service) Award; the President's Award and the Millie Kraft Award for her Service to Junior Bowlers.
